Ubisoft Developing New Battle Royale Game After XDefiant Shutdown in 2025

Ubisoft is reportedly developing a new live service game, following the shutdown of XDefiant, which will officially close in June 2025. The game, which is currently operating under the codename “Scout,” will feature battle royale gameplay, according to a report from Insider-Gaming. According to one source, the reason for this is that Ubisoft wants to take advantage of the decreasing player base of Apex Legends, and it believes there’s space for another hero shooter battle royale on the market.

This new project is not Ubisoft’s first turn at bat with live service titles. Meanwhile, Rainbow Six Siege is still a big hit for the company, but it’s a paid game, not free-to-play. Ubisoft has varied success with its free-to-play titles. One of its more successful freemium games is Brawlhalla, for example. Its longest-running free-to-play game is Growtopia, a PC-only MMO sandbox.

Ubisoft’s other free-to-play titles, such as Battle Core Arena, Rocksmith+, Roller Champions, Trackmania, and Rabbids Coding, are vehicles in the company’s ongoing free-to-play push, but it hasn’t shared much regarding their performance. XDefiant, which was formerly part of Ubisoft’s portfolio of free-to-play games, was unlisted following the announcement of its termination. The same fate was shared with Ubisoft’s Dead on Arrival free-to-play shooter, Hyper Scape.

Due to this record, skepticism exists over the fate of “Scout.” Battle royale games have fallen from the premier genre that they once were, with the genre still dominated by heavyweight titles such as Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and PUBG. XDefiant’s potential, with its more traditional multiplayer format, was seen by some as a better opportunity to break through. If “Scout” does launch on PC and consoles, it remains to be seen whether Ubisoft will offer the necessary support to help the game succeed, especially after the shortcomings with XDefiant.
