Chelsea ends up taking a huge financial hit against Timo Werner and has agreed on a fee of around £25m to sell him back to RB Leipzig, merely two years after they spent almost twice as much to get him into the Premier League.
Timo Werner is reportedly close to making a comeback to RB Leipzig after the German club reached a transfer agreement with Chelsea. He left Leipzig for a move but will return to his former club for just €30m (£25.3m), according to Sky Germany.
It seems like Serie A giants Juventus have also expressed their interest in signing the player this summer, but the German wishes to return to Leipzig.
About Timo Werner’s departure
Timo Werner has promised to return just two years after leaving RB Leipzig. Thomas Tuchel struggled to get the most out of Werner during his years at Stanford Bridge. Chelsea is set to lose £22.2 million as a deal nears completion for the player who was supposed to fix his striker’s problems when he arrived in West London two years ago.
Instead, Werner’s time at Chelsea was mostly disappointing as the striker only managed 10 league goals in his two seasons at the club.
However, he won the Champions League in his first season with the Blues in his 2020/21 season, scoring a goal in his semi-final victory over Madrid.
But it was for the best for the striker. He was behind Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku last season and made just 15 top-flight starts all season.
Werner struggled to produce consistent results at Chelsea during his time in England. After Lukaku’s return to Inter Milan earlier this summer, Werner may have wanted more play time, however, that was highly unlikely. The striker was completely excluded from the Saturday’s trip to Everton, marking the end of his journey at Stamford Bridge.
Werner will now try to return to his best at Leipzig, the club where he first found success. During his first season at Leipzig, he scored 90 goals in his 156 appearances. This includes his 28 goals in the Bundesliga last season at the club before joining Chelsea.
