The Tinder Swindler narrates the dumbfounding story of a serial scammer who presented himself as a billionaire Playboy on Tinder and the lady who set out to take him down. Users are always warmed about the people they meet on online dating apps, and there’s no finer example of this going worse than Netflix’s The Tinder Swindler. Unfortunately, it’s more common than users can even imagine.
So when it comes to digital platforms for dating, there will be minute signs to look out for to ensure you’re not on the wrong path and that you’re not cheated. Let’s see what the experts have to say in this regard.
That’s Not a Han, it’s a Bot
There are various models. In one of them, the bot will approach the victim and get started with a conversation. But before taking the talk further, it can ask the person to verify their account, stating they are doing it for the security of the two persons. To serve this purpose, it will initiate a link and when the users click on it they are directed to a website where their personal and even bank details can be asked.
This is where the person can fall prey to phishing. One should remember, profile verification on Tinder doesn’t need the users to click on any link, it’s usually done after the area configuration of each account. Any attempt to take them to any other site can be seen as a scam.
Another attempt could be claiming to share videos and images through malicious links. Since it’s not possible to use attachments there, it might send links clicking which can land the users in deep trouble and their information could be stolen.
Catfishing
Another popular form of scam is catfishing where the opposite person will hide their actual identities to create romantic relationships with another person. First, they develop an emotional bond and then end up asking for money for an invented reality. They not only lie about their age, place, or gender but fake their residence and phone numbers too!
Sextortion
In case of sexual blackmailing, scammers often try taking the conversation outside Tinder on other chatting platforms and manipulate them through unfair means to demand money. The Tinder Swindler was released on 2nd February 2022 and is available to watch on Netflix.
