The Last of Us Season 2 to Deviate From Game’s Timeline

HBO’s The Last of Us is set to come back for its highly anticipated second season in April, and it’s going to look a bit different. Showrunner Craig Mazin confirmed that Season 2 will not adhere closely to the plot of the games, although he didn’t say how specific the divergence would be.

The changes were carefully made for maximum suitability to its new medium; as Mazin has put it, “we messed around in ways that were more appropriate to the show,” noting that they were figured out “scientifically.”

The Last of Us: Part II used a nonlinear story structure, jumping between characters such as Ellie and Abby. While the structure of the second season will be in a similar mode, showrunner Neil Druckmann said that getting into specifics would be a spoiler. Indeed, he said, they tried out a number of different strategies before landing on what will be seen in the show. Other show updates included confirmation that Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, won’t undergo the same physical transformation as her game counterpart.

Also in Season 2, a new character who’s never appeared in the games will join the cast, along with another who was only referenced in them. Mazin did concede some fans would be annoyed by the creative changes he sees coming this season and said the key was making things as interesting as they possibly could be — even if it got a bit controversial.

He expressed his commitment to the vision for the series, saying, “We don’t operate to either make people happy on social media or avoid making them upset.” The highly anticipated Season 2 of The Last of Us is set to premiere this April on HBO and Max, though an exact release date has yet to be revealed. Additionally, The Last of Us Part II Remastered will be available for PC in April, requiring a PSN account.
