After several delays and a long wait, Tata’s much anticipated Super App is finally showing signs of arrival. The chairman of the Tata Group N Chandrasekaran has recently given a sneak peek of the ‘TataNeu’ super app to its senior leadership on Tuesday.
However, even if the Super App has received a sneak peek the actual commercial launch of the TataNeu is still some months away as several pieces are yet to fall in place. Tata Group is soon expected to open up the platform only for use among its employees.
The conglomerate wants to tap its huge workforce of over 7 lakh people, a ready user base, for the super app pilot study. So what is this Super App? The term super app is coined by Blackberry founder Mike Lazaridis in 2010 for many of its apps within an umbrella app.
While some group apps like BigBasket, 1MG, Taj, Croma, and AirAsia have boarded TataNeu, other apps of the conglomerate such as Titan, Tanishq, Cliq, and Starbucks are yet to get onto it. Tata Group stated that the move to bring about a super app is due to the Indian government proposing tough e-commerce rules.
The Super App officially called the TataNeu will have a new loyalty program where customers can earn points redeemable for any other buys made on the platform. The super app from Tata Group indeed is the first of its kind for India, however, the Bank of America released a report in August stating that, “India has the potential to have 3-4 super apps”.
One of the appealing features of a super app is that it cleans up a smartphone’s home screen, a valuable piece of digital real estate.
