When Tata Motors launched Altroz in India, it was going for gold. As a result, it is known as the “gold standard” in the premium hatchback segment. But, Altroz makes a very compelling case. It has one-of-a-kind, 90-degree opening doors, as well as all of the features and creature comforts one would expect from a vehicle in this class.
It also looks good, and to top it all off, it receives 5-stars in the Global NCAP crash test, which is unrivalled in the segment. Tata even mocked the i20 and Baleno, calling them tricks when the real treat is the i20. However, the Baleno is currently the best-selling car in India, according to our data. The Hyundai i20 is ranked among the top ten hatchbacks.
Tata needs to do something to improve this market segment. In this regard, we recently received new spy images of the 2023 Altroz, which is currently being tested on the road. Rajeesh Kumar, an automotive enthusiast, shared these exclusive spy shots on Rushlane Spylane. It is most likely a 2023 Altroz that has been fully camouflaged. Altroz CNG has been tested since 2021, and we even spotted an Altroz CNG with emission testing equipment just last month. However, this new test mule lacks emission testing equipment.
It could be an update to the current Altroz. This is because Altroz has been on the market since January 2020. That was 2.5 years ago, and there hasn’t been a single update since. It only has the Dark Edition option. However, the i20 and, in particular, the Baleno are far ahead of Altroz. As a result, Tata is likely to launch a facelift in order to re-establish interest in its gold standard and drive sales even higher.
The test mule in question appears to be the top trim because it has a rear defogger and a rear washer with a wiper. Somehow, the wiper is not there. However, it is a premium trim. One noticeable alteration that we could spot in an instance is that this test mule got single-tone alloy wheels. Dual-tone alloys are added to the outgoing model.
In terms of the final set of predictions, it has a very good chance of becoming the production version of Altroz EV.
We say this because the test mule has a cutout for the exhaust tip to protrude from. However, due to the camera angle, an exhaust is not visible. Altroz EV made its debut at the 2020 Auto Show.
Given that Tata Motors is aggressively growing its EV line with the recent introduction of Tiago EV, this test mule may be an EV. The 2023 Altroz EV was planned to have the same battery pack as the Nexon EV Prime with a reported range of 350 to 400 km. Currently, Altroz competes against vehicles like the Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20, Maruti Baleno, and others and offers 1.2L and 1.5L petrol and diesel engine options.
