Former Indian and East Bengal superstar Surajit Sengupta breathed his last on Tuesday after following severe Covid 19 complications. He was 70. The tragic news comes just after 26 days of the passing away of his former teammate Subhash Bhowmik. Fans are devastated after their ‘heartthrob’ has lost the battle to Covid 19 issues and will never remember his on-field magical contributions.
Surajit Sengupta: His Achievements
Let us talk about some of the magic moments cantered by the star footballer that his fans would ever cherish.
Captaining East Bengal
The star right-winger joined PK Bannerjee’s empowering East Bengal in the early 70s and captained the team in 1978. During that time the team won the Durand Cup, IFA Shield, Federation Cup, and the Bordoloi Trophy where they defeated Port Authority Bangkok 4-2. Surajit Sengupta scored the first two goals.
Wining IFA Shield Thrice
Sengupta even won the Kolkata League and IFA Shield double thrice in 1974, 75 and 76, Rovers cup in 1975, and Darjeeling Cup in 1976.
The Dribbling Emperor, Pass Master and Goal Machine
Sengupta scored a total of 147 club goals, smashing 92 for East Bengal and 54 for Mohun Bagan (joined the club in 1972 first and then again in 1980 and stayed there till his retirement in 1983). He even played a season with Mohammedan Sporting in 1980 and scored a goal for them. During his tenure with that club, he won the Sikkim Gold Cup, DCM Trophy, and Rovers cup (joint title holders with East Bengal).
Sengupta even scored 26 goals in four successive winning Santosh Trophy campaigns (1975-78) for Bengal.
Lifetime Achievement
For his spectacularly brilliant contribution to the club, East Bengal awarded him the Lifetime Achievement award in 2018.
Surajit Sengupta has left behind his legacy for his fans to cherish lifelong.
