The Tensor SoC, which powers Google’s current Pixel 6 series, was released last year as the company’s first-ever mobile chipset. Although the first-generation Tensor chipset lacked the processing power of the Snapdragon 888 or the Apple A15, it offered advantages in terms of GPU performance, machine learning, and AI.
Now, Google is preparing to release the next-generation Tensor chipset with the Pixel 7 series later this year, and the latest rumor provides some details about the next chip.
According to a new claim from Korea’s daily, Google has hired Samsung to manufacture its next-generation Tensor chipset, presumably the Tensor 2 SoC, in time for the Pixel 7 series’ debut later this year.
Samsung is also revealing that the Tensor 2 SoC is built on a 4nm design. Samsung also used the 5nm design to produce the first-generation Tensor chipset
As a result, the Tensor 2 chipset should be more energy-efficient than its predecessor. Despite the updated manufacturing design, the Tensor 2 is predicted to give equivalent or slightly increased CPU and GPU performance to the first-gen Tensor SoC, according to the report. This may allow Google to keep the cost of its Pixel 7 smartphones comparable to those of the Pixel 6 variants.
Other information about Google’s future microprocessor remains a mystery. However, we might anticipate certain AI advancements as well. The Pixel 7 series, which Google teased at its I/O 2022 event last month, is likely to have a slightly different design and updated cameras, but the same display as the Pixel 6 series.
Although Google did not provide a specific debut date, it is likely to appear in October, along with the Pixel Watch. In the following days, we should learn more about the Pixel 7 series and the Google Tensor 2 processor.
