Newcastle United has already made its first January transfer window move, signalling that the Magpies are serious about avoiding relegation. The Magpies are now in 19th place with just one win and 11 points. Eddie Howe’s team has one of the league’s poorest defences, conceding 42 goals in just 19 games and an all-time high of 80 goals allowed in the calendar year 2021.
However, he has helped to rectify those flaws by bringing in England international Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid for $16.2 million. Trippier can play fullback in either position and will provide the club with talent, toughness, and leadership.
Newcastle, on the other hand, will not be just concerned with the defensive side of the game. They’ve only scored 19 goals themselves, which is worse than all but two of the relegation-threatened teams at the start of 2022. As a result, attacking assistance will almost certainly arrive before the end of January.
The Magpies have a new owner, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which is chaired by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. While there was opposition to the takeover by what amounts to a foreign government, the takeover was completed, and large finances are expected to be available for reinforcements this winter.

Breakdown of Newcastle’s business: New Arrivals
Kieran Trippier: Atletico Madrid (Permanent)
The 31-year-old full-acquisition back drove fans into a frenzy. The supporters have reacted well to a £12 million donation from Atletico Madrid. Trippier has started three Newcastle games so far and has been impressive.
Chris Wood: Burnley (Permanent)
Newcastle was willing to throw the chequebook at Burnley to get him, which was received with both excitement and scepticism. According to reports, the release clause is worth £25 million. Regardless, he is a seasoned Premier League striker who joins the club. In his first two outings for the club, he has yet to score.
Bruno Guimaraes: Lyon (Permanent)
With a fee of £38 million, the Brazilian midfielder becomes the club’s second most expensive signing ever. He has his finest years ahead of him at the age of 24, and he appears primed to slot straight into Eddie Howe’s side. In addition, he is a three-cap Brazilian international.
Matt Targett: Aston Villa (Loan)
It’s not a headline-grabbing move, but it’s one that Newcastle needed to make. It was the appropriate decision to move for a seasoned Premier League left-back when the opportunity arose on transfer deadline day. With Trippier on the right, the side will have a natural balance.
Dan Burn: Brighton and Hove Albion (Permanent)
Newcastle may have missed out on first-choice target Diego Carlos, but Dan Burn, who costs £13 million, is a capable replacement. Burn, who was born in the area, will have a strong relationship with the supporters and will be well aware of the demands, having helped Brighton establish itself as a Premier League club.
Ranking Newcastle with Others
On closing day, Premier League teams went bananas as some big players made last-minute moves to greener pastures. The moves of Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Dele Alli to Barcelona and Everton were the most high-profile transactions, although clubs across the division were busy until the final hours of the window. Last month, Newcastle signed five players, with Brighton’s Dan Burn and Aston Villa’s Matt Targett being the last to arrive at St James’ Park.
Aston Villa is now in the first place due to a slew of excellent additions that caught the league off guard. Nobody predicted Coutinho’s arrival at the start of the window, and in Digne, they have added one of the greatest left-backs in the Premier League.
Because of his playing experience, new manager Steven Gerrard has pulling power, which they exploited last month. The footballing world’s attention was drawn to Tyneside, however, as the new mega-rich owners were allowed to demonstrate their influence.
The transfer window was utilized to patch up a bad season by bringing in Premier League-proven players. Trippier is a wonderful find, as is Lyon’s Guimaraes, but the verdict on Wood is yet out.
If top targets Sven Botman and Diego Carlos had signed, the Magpies’ business would have received an A, however, those transactions fell through due to the Magpies’ precarious league position. If Newcastle is demoted, it will not be due to a lack of effort on the part of the new management.
