Ubisoft announced today that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, developed by the Ubisoft Montpellier team, has surpassed 2 million players since its release at the start of 2024. In a post on X, Ubisoft celebrated the milestone with a brief message that hinted at something more to come regarding the game: “Well over 2M players by now,” the post started. “You’ve revived the legend. The Prince is back, and believe us – he’s just warming up.”
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Hits 2 Million Players, But Ubisoft’s Future Plans Remain Uncertain
While this could be hinting at future content or updates for The Lost Crown, it probably speaks more to other Prince of Persia projects on the horizon, While this might imply that that there will be future updates or content for The Lost Crown, but it’s more likely a mention of The Rogue Prince of Persia (a game that went into early access) or the rebooted Sands of Time Remake (which was rebooted during development).
Ubisoft could maybe get the team for The Lost Crown back together, however, that is not likely to come right from the team being disbanded. If they do walk back that decision, it would be a surprising about-face from a decision many considered short-sighted.
Regardless of its sales performance, The Lost Crown was easily Ubisoft’s best game of 2024, with better critical reviews than any other Ubisoft game that year and absolutely ranking among the best games overall in 2024. Though it didn’t sell as well as they hoped, it was a success in a lot of ways. But now, Ubisoft’s move to split up the team behind that success has further added to the dissolution and confusion within the company.
It would be important to point out that Ubisoft has never seen the Prince of Persia series as one of its top priorities, like, for example, Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, or Rainbow Six. If it did, Prince of Persia would likely be part of Ubisoft’s main portfolio. Given the handling of The Lost Crown, fans of the series have little confidence that Ubisoft will prioritize the Prince of Persia franchise moving forward.
