Overwatch 2 will make it easier for free-to-play users to obtain Ramattra and the new Tank hero early in the season. Blizzard is poised to release Overwatch 2 Season 2 on Tuesday, December 6, with the arrival of deadly Null Sector boss Ramattra as the main new addition to the free-to-play shooter.
Ramattra is a new Tank hero and the fourth to be added to the Overwatch 2 roster since the game’s early access debut in October. Ramattra’s hallmark ability allows him to morph into a formidable Nemesis mode with heightened melee powers and the ability to strike through shields. Ramattra is set up to be one of the Overwatch 2 universe’s “big bads,” and his relationship with Zenyatta should be interesting as well.
Overwatch 2 gamers who are eager to experience Ramattra will be able to do so on December 6, but only if they acquire the Season 2 Battle Pass. This was also true for Support hero Kiriko, who required players to reach tier 55 in the Battle Pass in order to access her. However, Blizzard has chosen to make Ramattra more accessible by allowing free players to acquire the new character when they reach tier 45.
Blizzard’s Aaron Keller revealed this, citing data gathered by the team during Season 1. Aside from bumping Ramattra up to tier 45 of the free Battle Pass, the decision was made to make certain of the Overwatch 2 weekly tasks easier to complete.
This should allow free players to unlock Ramattra in Overwatch 2 far faster than they could Kiriko, but fans will have to wait until Season 2 to see exactly how much this enhances the experience.
The decision to lock new Overwatch 2 heroes behind the Battle Pass has been highly debated, and while putting Ramattra on a higher tier and making weekly challenges easier will help, it is unlikely to please all Overwatch 2 fans. In fact, there have been numerous replies to Keller’s tweets, indicating that there are still many Overwatch 2 players who are upset about new heroes not being instant-unlocks like they used to be, though it does not appear that Blizzard will change its mind. The good news is that Ramattra will not be available in Overwatch 2 Competitive Play when he launches, giving dedicated players plenty of time to unlock him.
Overwatch 2 is out now in early access for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
