Minecraft’s worldwide popularity keeps growing, with about 200 million active players and a movie in the works. But fans may soon get something even bigger: a spiritual successor to Minecraft. The original creator of the game, Markus “Notch” Persson, recently shared plans for a new project that combines aspects of traditional roguelikes with the visual style of a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler.
Notch Teases Spiritual Successor to Minecraft, Fans Hope for Minecraft 2
Notch recently posted about his new game on X, and acknowledged that fans probably want him to create a spiritual successor to Minecraft. He did a quick follow-up poll asking if people preferred this instead. Over 75% and serving up 180,000 votes from around the world, and a strong desire for what many are dubbing – Minecraft 2 This means we could see a new game with similar mechanics, but in a new world and under a new concept, if Notch decides to move ahead.
But a real Minecraft 2 may not be on the table. Notch explained on Twitter that he’s not allowed to make Minecraft 2 because the game’s IP is held by Microsoft. Notch sold Mojang Studios, the studio behind Minecraft, to Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014, at the height of the game’s stratospheric popularity. Notch doesn’t own the Minecraft mechanics, but he could certainly make another game using something in a similar vein, but a different name and setting so Microsoft wouldn’t feel stepped on.
However, it is worth noting that Notch does not rule out working with Microsoft again in the future, or even giving them a larger share of the game’s revenue if they do manage to make another collaboration. If Notch has been working on a spiritual successor to Minecraft, it can only stand to reason that fans are closely watching Notch’s social media for updates on his new project — which, at this time, still has no official title.
