Norwich City has interviewed Frank Lampard for the vacant manager’s position as they near a decision on Daniel Farke’s replacement. Lampard would meet with the Canaries to discuss the head coach’s position, and it is understood that the meeting has now taken place.
Lampard is one of the frontrunners to succeed Farke at Carrow Road. Norwich is also interested in Dean Smith, who was fired by Aston Villa over the weekend. Lampard has been out of work since being fired by Chelsea at the start of 2021, but with Farke’s firing, he rapidly emerged as a major candidate for the job at Carrow Road.
Norwich City is now bottom of the Premier League, with only one win in 11 games, and Lampard will be charged with avoiding relegation. Petr Cech, a former Chelsea teammate, said he is not shocked Lampard is returning to management in the Premier League.
Cech said earlier on Thursday: ‘He has all the qualities to be a Premier League manager.
“If anybody is interested and anybody comes to speak to him if they have the right project for Frank, he loves football and loves coaching with the same passion he had for playing.”
“I’m not surprised his name is coming up now and will only be a matter of time before he returns to the Premier League.”
Despite leading Norwich to their first Premier League victory of the season, a 2-1 triumph over fellow newly-promoted side Brentford, Farke was relieved of his duties. Norwich is in the bottom half of England’s top flight with five points, level on points with Newcastle, who have yet to win this season after a 1-1 draw against Brighton.
Lampard has been unemployed since Chelsea fired him in January, and he has been waiting for his next assignment with bated breath. Under a transfer embargo, he took over as manager at his previous club and led them to fourth place in their first season, as well as to the FA Cup final.
However, after a string of devastating defeats, he was dismissed by Thomas Tuchel, who went on to win the Champions League against Man City the following season.
Lampard began his managing career with Derby County in the Championship. Lampard took advantage of his contacts in the game to bring in young players on loan, such as FikayoTomori and Mason Mount, who flourished. He led the Rams to the Championship play-off final, however, they were defeated by Aston Villa, who have now selected Steven Gerrard as their new manager.
