The female weightlifter, Mirabai Chanu, gave India, its first medal in the Tokyo Olympics, in weightlifting of women’s 49 categories. She lifted 202 kg weight of which 115 kg in clean and jerk, and 87 kg in the snatch at the time of her successful attempts in the competition.

Zhihui Hou of China became first in this event, bagging a total of 210 kg, creating a new Olympic record. Windy Cantika Aisah of Indonesia, became third, bagging 194 kg weight. Chanu acquiring the silver medal, became second India after Karnam Malleswari, to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting. Malleswari secured the bronze medal by lifting 69 kg in the 2000 Sydney games. In that year, the women athletes got to participate in weightlifting for the first time.

On Twitter, Mirabai Chanu commented that she is certainly very happy by winning the silver medal at the Toyko Olympics for India. It has been like a dream come true moment for her. She also said that she is dedicating this medal to his country and thanked the prayers of billions of Indians, for being with her during her journey so far.
Also, she thanked her family, especially her mother for her sacrifices, and for believing in her. She specially thanked the government, Ministry of Sports, IOA, SAI, Railways, Weightlifting Federation of India, OGQ, sponsors, and marketing agency IOS, for supporting her consistently throughout her journey.
In the end, she gave special thanks to her head coach, Vijay Sharma, and support staff, for their consistent hard work, training, and motivation, and showed her gratitude to the entire weightlifting fraternity, and all her countrymen. JAI HIND.
