Luka Modric had a terrific year at Real Madrid despite being on the wrong side of 30. He almost played every Real Madrid match last season and was an important part of the team which went to the Champions League semi-finals and were in the La Liga title race till the last matchday.

The Croatian has now signed a contract extension with Real Madrid and, without any hesitation, has accepted a pay cut due to the COVID-19 crisis. He has also honoured the club’s decision to take one year at a time, so he has signed a one-year contract extension which will keep him at the club till 2022.

Modric told Real Madrid TV, via Marca: “It means a lot to me, it fills me with pride. It means I’ll have been here 10 years, which I didn’t expect because I was 27 years old when I arrived and the demands at this club are massive if you are to deserve to stay,”

“There’s nothing better than being a Real Madrid player, playing at the [Estadio Santiago] Bernabeu… there’s nothing better.”

“Everyone wants to come here and I’m going to have been here for 10 years.”

Modric added: “There are many beautiful moments: winning the 10th Champions League, and winning the double in 2016/17 was great,”

“[The year of] 2018 was incredible on a personal level, the Champions League final I enjoyed most was Cardiff [in 2017].”

“What we’ve done in these nine years is unrepeatable. You think about the four Champions Leagues and, if I’m honest, I didn’t expect it.”

“Zidane showed us videos of sporting dynasties, in basketball, American football…”
