Rafael Nadal was the latest player to join Team Europe for the 2022 Laver Cup when he arrived in London on Thursday morning.
Shortly after he arrived in London, news of Roger’s dream of pairing him with Federer in doubles was confirmed as Laver his Cup announced the official match line-up for the first day of the event.
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer defined the last generation of tennis, dominating the men’s game throughout their careers and engaging in one of the fiercest rivalries the individual sport has ever seen.
The Swiss and Spaniard will team up as doubles partners at the Laver Cup in London on Friday after Federer announced his retirement.
Both Nadal and Federer share their feelings regarding this pair up
“It’s a different kind of pressure to the one we’ve shared before,” said Nadal. “Being part of a historic moment like this is unforgettable for me. I’m very excited and I hope I can play well and win the match.”
“Being by Roger’s side again is something I’m looking forward to and I’m very happy about it. Personal relationships are more important than professional ones, and it’ll be hard for us both to manage everything.”
“One of the most important players I’ve seen in my career is leaving tennis, and I’m grateful to be able to play with him. I can’t thank the team enough.”
Rafael Nadal announced at a press conference, “After all the amazing things we shared together on and off the court, to be part of this historic moment is going to be something amazing and unforgettable for me. Super excited.
“I hope I have a good chance to play at a decent level and hopefully together we can create a good moment and maybe win a match. So let’s see.”
On having players like Nadal and Djokovic by his side for his farewell Roger Federer expressed his excitement as well. “I’ve had some tougher moments as well in the past, being horribly nervous all these years before a match and this one feels a lot more different. I am super excited to have them on our team and not having to play against them in my last match is super special. Playing with Rafa feels really different,” said Roger.
“Walking out on the court and having a chance to play with the likes of Rafa or Novak in the past has been a wonderful experience for me and to be able to do that one more time, I’m sure it’s going to be wonderful.”
