Sony Pictures has now confirmed the release date for Jumanji 3 as December 11, 2026. The studio only just announced that this third entry in its franchise renaissance is in the works — as well as slated for IMAX and other Premium Large Formats over two years in the future. This timeline means fans will be waiting a while for the film, and while the cast has not been locked in yet, Deadline says director Jake Kasdan and stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan are all in talks to come back.
The Next Instalment of Jumanji: Jumanji 3
The concept of the jungle board game used in the Jumanji franchise was originally introduced to audiences in 1995. In that film, the titular board game releases dangerous wildlife and a lost boy, played by Robin Williams, into the real world. The movie achieved cult classic status, though, and Sony rebooted the franchise six years later with a new cast in 2017. With new spins on the story, the revived series, titled Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, starred Johnson, Black, Hart, and Gillan.
In the remake, four high school students are transported to the world of Jumanji when a tabletop game is reinvented as a video game. As per the reviews, the 2017 film is a 7/10, calling it an “enjoyably comedic return adventure to Jumanji.” A sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level, followed in 2019 and featured most of the original cast. While some worried that the sequel was taking the safe approach, fans called it a “blast” with a 7.5/10 score, and said it “wisely sheds more light on its characters before thrusting them back into the video game world.”
