Barcelona is in a difficult financial situation, due to which they haven’t been able to re-sign their legend Lionel Messi, who has now joined PSG as a free agent. The club’s debts now currently sit at €1.35 billion, according to club president Joan Laporta.

Gerard Pique was the first of the four captains to agree to a pay cut. It allowed Barcelona to register Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia and B team striker Rey Manaj in time for their LaLiga opening match against Real Sociedad.

Now, Jordi Alba has followed in the footsteps of Pique. Mundo Deportivo report that Alba has lowered his salary by 25% and has also postponed part of the payment of his wages until 2024.

Alba said after the Real Sociedad game on 15th August: “Nobody from the club asked me for anything until two or three weeks ago.”

“I’ve always wanted to help and I don’t think anyone should doubt me. My attitude has always been the same.”

“Due to timing it was Pique’s turn, but there shouldn’t be any doubts [that I will follow suit].”
