IPL franchise Punjab Kings have appointed Trevor Bayliss as their new head coach for IPL 2023 season. He replaced Anil Kumble in the head coach’s department, the decision was made official on Friday. Previously, he has worked with two times winner Kolkata Knight Riders and one time winner Sunrisers Hyderabad.
” I’m honoured to be given the Head Coach’s role with the Punjab Kings. A foundation franchise with an appetite for success. I look forward to working with a talented squad of players determined to compete for silverware,” Bayliss said after his appointment as a head coach.
Kumble’s contract didn’t get renewed since, under his leadership, the team couldn’t perform well. from then, the team started looking out for other options. Under Kumble, Punjab couldn’t even make it to the playoffs for three seasons in IPL which made the owners displeased.
Punjab Kings finished in the sixth position in the last four seasons. In 2022, Mayank Agarwal took the captaincy from KL Rahul but couldn’t show his skills in batting.
Bayliss seems like a good option since he has a lot of experience and his name pops up among the top coaches in World Cricket too.
Back in 2019, Bayliss was the head coach when England lifted the World Cup. Under him Kolkata Knight Riders also lifted the Cup two times in 2012 and 2014. His guidance also helped in Sydney Sixers’ title victory. Sunrisers Hyderabad came third in 2020 but had a terrible time in 2021 with 3 wins in 14 games. It can be assumed that Punjab will be eyeing and manifesting their first IPL title as well. Earlier, the team reached the finals only once, in 2014 but got defeated by Kolkata knight Riders.
Mumbai Indians announced their new coach Mark Boucher. He replaced Mahela Jayawardene who received a wider and global role in the franchise.
