iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max to get a Higher-Binned A15 Bionic with alias ‘A15X Bionic’

The current-generation A15 Bionic is expected to power the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, while the A16 Bionic will be Apple reserved for the ‘Pro’ variants. Apple produced two versions of its current SoC, one with a 5-core GPU and the other with a 4-core GPU, as most of you are aware. The future models will apparently get the 5-core version, according to the latest information, and it’s possible that Apple will use a different name for the same bespoke silicon.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will be codenamed D27 and D28, according to sources close to 9to5Mac. Apple is likely to use a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch panel for the forthcoming handsets, providing users extra screen real estate. These sources also affirm that the A16 Bionic will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, and with its design rumoured to be finished, TSMC should be ramping up its 4nm chip production soon.

According to previous reports, all iPhone 14 models, including the ‘Pro’ ones, would include 6GB of RAM. The upgraded LPDDR5 chips are expected to be used in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, while the LPDDR4X technology will be used in the less priced models. However, there is some confusion on the RAM amount of all iPhone 14 models, as a prior report indicated that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will have 8GB RAM.

Apple might alternatively rename the A15 Bionic as the A15X Bionic to help users distinguish between the A15 Bionic found in newer models and the A15X Bionic found in the recently released 2022 iPhone SE, which has a 4-core GPU. Apple utilised a different designation for the processor in the 2020 iPad Pro, called the A12Z Bionic, so this technique isn’t new. The only difference between this version and the A12X Bionic was that the A12Z Bionic included an additional GPU core, but all other specifications were identical.
