Chelsea defied all odds and has won the Champions League by beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 1-0. Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the final from an wonderful Mount throughball as he justified his expensive price tag. Thomas Tuchel was spot on with this tactics in the final.
Apart from lifting the coveted UEFA Champions League trophy, Chelsea will be awarded handsome prize money as the winners of the UEFA Champions League 2020-21. So how much will prize money have they won?
It has been learned, via football.london, Chelsea has earned more than £95m in prize money and the whole squad is set to share a £10m bonus.
If Chelsea had lost the final the squad would have shared £5m but as the winners, they will now share a £10m bonus. All the players will get some share even if they hadn’t played any significant in the win.
However, surprisingly, winning the final was only worth an additional €4m (£3.45m) compared to if they had been defeated.
Chelsea’s total income for the campaign is now €110.8m (£95.2m). But this figure does not include any money from UEFA’s market pool, which mainly compromises the broadcast income. UEFA’s market pool is worth €292m (£250m) this season, out of which Chelsea will get 10% of the portion due to Premier League clubs.
In this time of financial crisis due to the COVID-19, winning the Champions League would put some of the financial burdens off Chelsea and they could continue to strengthen their squad in this transfer window.
