Half Life 2 is being remastered by Valve, including new Nvidia ray tracing features and enhanced graphics created by a creative modding crew. Half Life 2 will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2024, and the new remaster appears to mark the occasion with significant upgrades and features compatible with modern gaming PCs.
Half Life 2 was launched on PC in November 2004 and rapidly became one of the platform’s most critically lauded titles. Half Life 2 was released on the original Xbox one year later, exposing many console players to the classic first-person shooter franchise. The game would be re-released on a variety of platforms, including Mac and Android devices, and would be followed by episode sequels titled Half Life 2: Episode One and Half Life 2: Episode Two. Half-Life Alyx, a prequel, would be released in 2020, bringing the franchise into VR for the first time.
Nvidia has released Half Life 2 RTX: An RTX Remix Project, a new remaster created by Orbifold Studios, a collaboration of four community mod teams.
The remaster will make use of the most recent version of Nvidia’s RTX Remix technology, which was previously used to create Portal with RTX and Portal: Prelude.
In the new remaster, Orbifold Studios is reconstructing practically every asset of Half Life 2 using Physically Based Rendering (PBR) properties, Valve’s Hammer editor, and several other Nvidia technologies. As a result, fans can anticipate a bevy of new features, including full ray tracing, DLSS 3, Reflex, and RTX IO. A new teaser has been produced to highlight the remaster’s upgrades as well as its several RTX-related features.
According to Nvidia, the world and textures in the remaster will have approximately eight times the pixels of the original game. Furthermore, while playing Half-Life 2 RTX, players should expect a significant boost in geometric details. Because ray tracing will be used in the remaster, lighting and shadows have been much enhanced.
Because Half Life 2 RTX is still in early development, Nvidia and Orbifold Studios did not provide a release date. The developers, on the other hand, indicate that they are still looking for modders and 3D artists for the project, and that additional information would be released at a later date.
