The Google TV Android app is taking some key features from its Chromecast sibling
Android applications for Google TV are gaining new discovery features. Moreover, it will now support entertainment, news, and TV applications that were previously unavailable, such as YouTube TV and FuboTV.
The Google TV Android app will borrow some of the Google TV discovery tools on the Chromecast. This includes more lines of personalized recommendations, and the “watched” tools that are now available in the TV experience. To help improve recommendations Google TV has new options. If users have watched a series or movie recommended by the platform, they can now go to the detail page of the title. Then select “Watched” to find the desired movie or web series. In addition, the Android app will now display Rotten Tomatoes scores. This will be on show and movie posters, which is another useful feature that Chromecast inherits with the GoogleTV experience. The poster itself has also received an in-app update, with a new 16:9 widescreen look.
Finally, this update will add support for multiple streaming services to Google TV for Android. Discovery Plus, Viki, Cartoon Network, PBS Kids, and Boomerang will enter the mobile app with the update, as will other live TV apps (including YouTube TV, Philo, and FuboTV). The application can be controlled from the “Administration Services” menu in the account settings.
Although the changes are minor, the app updates should help discover and recommend content in the Android mobile experience. “Observed” is a particularly useful tool that can delete content that you have seen in recommendations. And the additional support for live TV applications should please cable editors who like to broadcast on the go.
