Gigabyte has published a new BIOS for its 500 and 400 series AM4 motherboards, allowing them to handle AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor. The current Gigabyte BIOS is based on the AGESA ComboV2 PI 1.2.0.6B BIOS, which is an improvement over the 1.2.0.5 BIOS Firmware, which had a few issues while using TPM mode. The updated BIOS not only updates your motherboard to the latest BIOS firmware, but it also includes new support for the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which is an upcoming new CPU. The ‘Max CPU Boost Clock Override’ option for AMD’s Vermeer (Ryzen 5000) CPUs has been re-enabled in the latest BIOS, which is an intriguing addition. The critical points from Gigabyte are listed below (via Komachi).

According to Specs, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D will have eight cores and 16 threads in a single CCD. It will have a base speed of 3.4 GHz and a boost clock of 4.5 GHz, slower than the Non-3D Ryzen 7 5800X’s 4.7 GHz. The TDP of the CPU will be 105W, the same as the Ryzen 7 5800X.

The amount of cache on the two chips is the main difference. Within the vertical stacks, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D will have 32 MB of L3 cache on-die and 64 MB of cache off-die. The CPU will have a single 3D V-Cache stack with 64 MB of L3 cache that sits on top of the TSVs already present on Zen 3 CCDs. This will offer the Zen 3 cores a total of 96 MB of L3 cache.

The Zen 3 CCD and V-Cache have been thinned to match the Z-height of modern Zen 3 processors, rather than having different heights between the cores and the IOD. The V-Cache does not affect the core’s heat output and has minimal power up-ticks because it sits on top of the CCD L3 cache. While frequency is crucial, most games are latency-sensitive; thus, adding additional stores was the most practical option, according to AMD. Furthermore, the different store’s benefits outweigh the frequency decrease; therefore, the chip still outperforms the ordinary Ryzen 7 5800X CPU even with that tradeoff.

In addition, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU will work with the whole AMD 400 and 500-series motherboard lineup. As we come closer to the new CPU’s Spring 2022 introduction, each motherboard maker will send out their BIOS to add compatibility to their products, so expect more motherboard makers to add support for the CPU to their respective lineups in the following days.
