Ghost of Yōtei Launches October 2025 with Bigger World, New Hero

In late April, Sucker Punch officially announced that Ghost of Yōtei, the much-anticipated sequel to 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima, will launch on October 2, 2025, exclusively for the PlayStation 5. Being a sequel to one of the most lauded action-adventure titles of the previous generation, expectations are understandably high.

The first Ghost of Tsushima was not only critically acclaimed, but it was also a record-setting game in terms of sales for a first-party PS4 game. The reaction was so good, in fact, that Sony promptly greenlit both a sequel and a film adaptation, now in development with John Wick director Chad Stahelski attached to oversee. In a recent interview with PlayStation Inside, former boss of PlayStation Studios Shuhei Yoshida shared his thoughts on the new game. He revealed that he has played Ghost of Yōtei at different steps in its development, and feels that it exceeds the precedent in many aspects.

Yoshida also reflected on what made Ghost of Tsushima so authentic. Sucker Punch collaborated closely with Japanese staff at Sony Interactive Entertainment and Japan Studio, receiving guidance on cultural accuracy and respect for Japanese history. The team even traveled to Tsushima Island to absorb its atmosphere, which influenced the game’s distinctive elements, like its wind navigation system. The game’s attention to cultural detail was so impactful that it even helped increase tourism to the real Tsushima Island.

Yoshida emphasized that creating a successful game about Japan requires deeply understanding the culture, and he believes Sucker Punch has once again achieved that with Ghost of Yōtei. Following the release date announcement, Sucker Punch also teased new gameplay details. The game will feature the studio’s most expansive open world to date and offer players unprecedented freedom. The campaign, centered on the protagonist Atsu’s quest for vengeance, will be non-linear, allowing players to confront the Yōtei Six—Atsu’s enemies—in any sequence.
