Borussia Dortmund, the German Cup holders, were knocked out of the competition on Tuesday after a 2-1 defeat in their last 16 meetings against St Pauli of the second tier.  St Pauli did well, but we’re out,” Dortmund captain Marco Reus said after the match.

Togo attacker Etienne Amenyido gave the hosts an early lead, but Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel scored their own goal. Dortmund’s star scorer Erling Haaland gave the visitors hope by converting a second-half penalty, but they were unable to equalize.

    About the Results

For the first time since 2006/07, neither Dortmund nor Bayern Munich, who were humiliated 5-0 by Borussia Moenchengladbach in the previous round in October, will be in the quarter-final draw.

After four minutes, Amenyido slipped between Dortmund captain Marco Reus and Manuel Akanji to convert a cross for St Pauli, who are presently top of the second Bundesliga table. Amenyido’s stunned expression during his celebrations revealed that he couldn’t believe his good fortune, while the Dortmund defense wore solemn expressions.

Witsel turned the ball into his net just before halftime while attempting to stop a cross to Amenyido, putting the away side 2-0 down at the interval.

    Dortmund Dumped Out

Mats Hummels’ pass clipped the outstretched arm of St Pauli defender Jakov Medic in the area, and Haaland converted the following penalty just before the hour mark to give Dortmund a lifeline.

Dortmund made a late push for a goal, but Reus and Donyell Malen both missed chances. Cologne has previously been eliminated by second-tier opponents after losing a penalty shoot-out 4-3 at home to Hamburg.

Cologne midfielder Florian Kainz scored with his vital last penalty kick, but it was overturned because he touched the ball twice, allowing Hamburg to advance. In the 122nd minute, Cologne attacker Anthony Modeste converted a last-gasp penalty to equalize and cancel out a Robert Glatzel goal, setting up dramatic scenes in extra time.

After a 1-0 win over third-tier 1860 Munich, Hamburg will be joined in the last eight by fellow second-tier club Karlsruhe. Bochum defeated Mainz 3-1 at home in an all-Bundesliga match. Forward Milos Pantovic scored twice.
