The nostalgic journey into Fortnite’s past continues this week with the launch of Fortnite OG Season 2, taking players back to the 2017 version of the game.
Back then, Epic’s metaverse was a thing, and when Fortnite was simply an emerging battle royale with a novel building mechanic that was exploding in popularity. Along with OG Season 2, the game’s map also got some updates.
Fortnite OG Season 2: Classic Locations Return, Map Changes, and More Nostalgic Surprises
There’s nothing so special about Season 2 in the way of actual gameplay, outside of it introducing the battle pass, a concept that’s been copy-pasted across the entire gaming industry in the intervening seven years since.
This battle pass also cemented Epic’s use of FOMO (fear of missing out) tactics to sell cosmetics. For anyone who was holding out hope that OG Season 2 would introduce the classic battle pass and the opportunity to earn the Black Knight skin all over again: sorry, but that’s not happening.
But OG Season 2 is returning a lot of nostalgic places from the past, including some that haven’t made it back to more recent battle royale islands or Reload at all since the first OG season earlier in 2023. And so there are a few real throwbacks to savor. As part of a season update rather than a new chapter, only part of the map is in for a rework. Here’s a glimpse at the changes to the Fortnite OG island in Season 2:
Shifty Shafts: A mining town south of Tilted Towers, Shifty was a mainstay of Chapter 1 since it was introduced in Season 2. It returned in Chapter 3 and is included in Reload.
Snobby Shores: A quaint suburb on the island’s western coast, Snobby Shores was once one of the best landing spots. It has been missing since Chapter 1 but made a brief return during 2023’s Fortnite OG season.
Haunted Hills: It hasn’t been reused on any later battle royale islands, so the original version of Haunted Hills is a lot more basic than how it developed by Season 6.
Junk Junction: A mini scrapyard that was more plentiful in Chapter 1, Junk Junction was a much smaller POI than the larger locations of today.
Tilted Towers: Perhaps the most famous location in all of Fortnite history, Tilted Towers has made appearances in Chapters 1, 3, and 4. The new version isn’t quite the same and has less among events, but that’s part of the charm of returning to it.
