Bethesda Game Studios has opened the Fallout 76 Public Test Server (PTS) this week, allowing it to introduce players to the third playable race in the game, the Ghoul, perhaps inspired by the buzz around Walton Goggins’ character, Cooper Howard, from the Fallout TV series.
Fallout 76 to Introduce Playable Ghouls in Early 2025 Update, Unlocking New Abilities and Story Paths
The developers posted some details on the Ghoul gameplay. You only get to play as a Ghoul at the endgame, with the related quest being unlocked at level 50. Players will be able to customize their Ghoul, including skin texture, and specialize their character “in dozens of alternate ways.” Ghouls are impervious to radiation, which heals them. If you stand on radioactive material, you can regain health, and for a while, the excess turns into a new resource called Glow. Glow can grant different auspices based on the character’s class.
In addition to standard human characters, ghouls also have a selection of 32 unique perk cards, allowing for more nuanced options for progression. Instead of hunger and thirst like humans, Ghouls have a feral meter they must manage. Speaking of maxing out the meter, if it is maxed out, the character goes feral, halving health and accuracy at the same time as improving melee combat, possibly leading to a berserker playstyle.
Ghouls will also be treated differently by NPCs and factions, with even the Brotherhood of Steel treating them differently, though some factions outright reject Ghouls. But this will create new narrative pathways for players to traverse. You’ll also have in-game options to mask your Ghoul identity. Also, Ghouls may transform back into human form, once per free of charge. The update is expected to be released in early 2025, although no specific date has been given. Most recently, Fallout 76 added the Gleaming Depths raid, an MMO-style endgame dungeon where players can face five challenging encounters for a chance to earn four-star legendary weapons.
