Punjab Kings (PBKS) has preferred Mayank Agarwal over Shikhar Dhawan for the skipper’s role. According to PTI, PBKS has settled for Mayank and not for Dhawan.
Agarwal has been a part of the Indian Test team and he was one of the two players to get retained by Punjab Kings. Apart from him, Arshdeep Singh before the Mega Auction. A formal announcement will be made soon.
“In all likelihood, Mayank will captain the side. The announcement is expected later this week,” an IPL source told PTI.
The team’s coach Anil Kumble & promoter Ness Wadia had given a clue in the Mega Auction stating that Shikhar Dhawan is a good fit for the captaincy role. However, everything changed in PBKS camp.
“Dhawan is a welcome addition to the side and was always on the radar at the auction. He is a champion player but it seems Punjab are keen on Mayank as captain” A source added.
Agarwal had an experience in the team when Rahul got injured. Agarwal had 400+ runs in the past two editions of IPL. He has played a total of 100 games, after making his debut in 2011.
“Obviously, if I am made the captain, I am totally up and ready for the responsibility but I will do everything that is required of me as a player if demanded. Whether I am made the captain or not, whatever responsibilities are given, whatever will be demanded of me everything will be done from my side,” Mayank told MensXP.
He has also played 19 Tests and five ODIs for India.
Punjab Kings is all set to pull up their socks and give a strong competition to other teams. The last time they were in the finals was in 2014 when they lost the game against KKR.
