Epic Games, the creator of the Fortnite video game, has chastised Apple for claiming that third-party app shops will jeopardize iPhone security. According to TechCrunch, Epic stated in a new court filing that if Apple can enable sideloading on Mac devices while still calling them secure, then it can undoubtedly do the same for iPhones.
“For macOS Apple relies on security measures imposed by the operating system rather than the app store, and anotarisationa¿ program that scans apps and then returns them to the developer for distribution,” the new filing said.
“The operating system Apple uses in its Mac computers (macOS) does not include the challenged restraints found in the iPhone operating system (iOS), and Apple publicly touts Mac’s security,” read the filing.

In the Epic Games v. Apple district court lawsuit last year, a US judge determined that Apple did not have a monopoly in the relevant market
However, a California court ruled that Apple could not prevent developers from including links to other payment systems that are not reliant on the App Store. Allowing sideloading, according to Apple, puts consumers’ “most sensitive and confidential information” at risk.
“Supporting sideloading through direct downloads and third-party app stores would cripple the privacy and security protections that have made iPhone so secure, and expose users to serious security risks,” the company said in a paper.
