Eidos Montreal has positive hopes for the journey of Guardians of the Galaxy

Despite a difficult start in terms of sales of the Guardians of the Galaxy game, Eidos Montreal, the game’s developer, is hopeful that the game will still be a “wonderful journey.”

Square Enix initially reported that Guardians of the Galaxy’s sales had underperformed following the game’s release in 2021. However, sales have increased since its debut thanks to several award nominations, promotions, and inclusion on Xbox’s Game Pass.

Meanwhile, it has received favourable feedback, and Eidos Montreal stands by the game’s overall quality.

“I have no regrets,” Guardians of the Galaxy senior creative director Jean-Francois Dugas told Eurogamer. “We did everything we could but that’s the reality of the market… And let’s not forget it’s a new IP. Even though we say all ‘Guardians [of the Galaxy] are known’, it’s still a new IP [in the video game market]. It could be a lot of people don’t even know that the game is out yet, or they’re not sure exactly what it is.”

While Guardians of the Galaxy had a slow start by Square Enix’s standards, it was nevertheless a highly acclaimed game with a compelling campaign that garnered good reviews. In the end, it outperformed its Marvel-inspired brother, Crystal Dynamics’ Avengers, which is placed lower due to its significant reliance on loot-based features.

While complimenting it as what a “linear, no-frills, single-player campaign should be,” the game “nicely combines a silly, action-filled adventure with some genuinely poignant moments.”
