The 131st Durand Cup kicks off on 16th August 2022 at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, with the final taking place on 18 September at the same venue. Established in 1888, it is the oldest football tournament in Asia.
Durand Cup Begins from August 16 Across Three Venues
The Durand Cup Committee has selected Sports18 as the official broadcaster for the tournament. Yes, there have been rumors vertically that the recently launched channel could host prestigious tournaments under its belt.
The Durand Cup 2022 is scheduled to start on August 16th. It will be the first time that all 11 teams from the Indian Super League will participate. Although the Durand Cup officials wanted to send the main team to the ISL side. Many clubs use reserve teams to carry out trades. The tournament will feature five I-League teams, four armed forces teams will also participate.
Changes in Schedules and Updates of Teams
Previously, it was decided that the Kolkata Derby would start this edition of the Indian Football calendar. However, over time, the decision changed.
The first match of the Duran Cup will be between last season’s champions and runners-up FC Goa and Mohammedan SC. The Kolkata Derby has been postponed to 28th August. Tickets for the big game are sold out. A small percentage put up for sale sold out within 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, Chennaiyin FC was the first team to arrive in Kolkata. Marina Machans also played some friendly matches before the Durand Cup. It shows how excited they are to start the season with a bang, while Kolkata giants East Bengal are yet to put an end to team building. A few days ago they signed 13 players, some of them include Jerry Lalrinzuala, Aniket Jadhav, and Souvik Chakrabarti.
Other Indian Super League teams such as Mumbai City and Orissa FC are also committed to this historic event. However, Gokulam Kerala withdrew its name from the competition for certain reasons. Sudeva Delhi has been included as a backup and the team will arrive at the venue on 17th August.
