Death Stranding Hits 20M Players Before Sequel’s Launch

Just a few months ahead of a highly anticipated sequel, Kojima Productions has now announced that Death Stranding has hit a huge milestone. On March 31, the studio announced its original game had brought together over 20 million players — or “porters” — on platforms ranging from PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 to PC, Xbox, iOS, and Amazon Luna.

This is a great sign for the upcoming sequel, which is set to release later in June and will be exclusive to PlayStation 5. Had its predecessor’s own history been any guide, Death Stranding 2 would also likely follow that path and then spread to additional platforms post-launch.

Death Stranding remains one of the most distinctive open-world games ever created. Players control one Sam Porter Bridges as he treks across an apocalyptic United States—now called the United Cities of America—delivering packages and reconnecting cut-off societies to restore society after a disaster known as the Last Stranding. They released a Director’s Cut for the game, which added new features, such as expanded combat mechanics, which managed to make the game’s unique mechanics and storytelling even better.

The follow-up, titled Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5 on June 26, 2025. Kojima Productions wants to step it up even further and create a more immersive, more ambitious experience. The game will feature a cast of new characters, including Neil, who is portrayed by Italian actor Luca Marinelli. His striking resemblance to Solid Snake has fueled speculation about possible connections between Death Stranding and the Metal Gear series.

With only a few months until launch, fans are eagerly awaiting more details. It remains to be seen whether Death Stranding 2 will deepen the ties between Hideo Kojima’s past and present projects or forge an entirely new narrative path.
