Like its predecessors, Borderlands 4 will feature four unique Vault Hunters and an arsenal of bizarre, over-the-top weapons. Players will step into the chaotic world of Kairos, controlling these distinct characters as they battle across the dystopian landscape. Two of the first two Vault Hunters were announced in a previous developer reveal, and additional information on all four was discussed by Gearbox at PAX East 2025. It’s set to release on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 on September 12. Although a price has yet to be locked in, Gearbox has detailed a host of improvements, including a retooled co-op system, revamped loot mechanic, and numerous tweaks to the core experience.
Borderlands 4 Unveils Full Vault Hunter Roster, Powers, and September 12 Launch Across All Major Platforms
One of the new Vault Hunters will be Vex, a “Dark Siren” who has only recently come into her powers. Hardened by a rough past, she’s cynical and sarcastic. She stands out from previous Sirens as the first to manifest physical entities like Reapers and Spectres, and she specializes in kinetic damage. Her skills include element swapping and life draining of an enemy. The one brings down a massive spectral cat named Trouble, the other allows her to summon delicate but heavy-hitting Spectres.
Vex is a strong crowd-control with the right elemental tuning. Rafa is an ex-Tediore soldier who was raised in microgravity and requires an exosuit to live on a planet. Discovering his military contract had no expiration, he went AWOL, but the exosuit is, even now, a ticking time bomb. Nevertheless, Rafa is optimistic and the fastest Vault Hunter yet. He’s armed with energy blades, laser guns, and shoulder cannons, and his witty lines even provoke responses from enemies in combat. Harlowe, a former Maliwan combat scientist from the infamous Traunt family, is a cheerful genius with gravity-based powers and a variety of advanced gadgets.
She can construct a massive weapon that fires a destructive disco ball and manipulate gravity to hurl enemies. More of her tools remain under wraps, but what’s been shown already promises creative and explosive gameplay. Amon, known as the Forge Knight, comes from a tragic background. Raised by a Vault monster-worshipping cult, he lost everyone he cared about when a Vault creature wiped out his community. Now, he seeks revenge and is driven by a personal vendetta. Amon is a thoughtful, poetic warrior who uses drones fused to his body to summon weapons like swords, axes, hammers, spears, shields, and whips, giving off a sci-fi Viking vibe.
According to narrative director Lin Joyce, anyone at Gearbox can pitch ideas for new Vault Hunters. These ideas are reviewed, refined, and sometimes combined before moving into design, ensuring a wide range of creative input. Art director Adam May says the team views Vault Hunters like comic book heroes—someone players can relate to or aspire to become. But creating a Vault Hunter is no small task. Creative director Graeme Timmins notes that it’s a long, collaborative process that continues throughout the game’s development, with multiple departments involved until the final vision is realized.
