Release Date and Hit Status
Black Widow was released in the US on 9th July 2021 in theatres and also on Disney+ with premier Access for US$30.
Black Widow is the first Marvel movie to make its debut on Disney Plus and on that very day it was released in theatres. But based on financial figures Disney released it on Sunday. The movie has become very successful on the streaming service in its first weekend, where it is available as a premier Access. According to Deadline, the movie has earned $60 million in sales on Disney Plus, which is not far behind the $80 million that was earned at the domestic box office. The $78 million was earned internationally.
Disney has first introduced the Premier Access program, which allowed the Disney Plus subscribers to stream select new movies for $30 on that very day it was released in theatres. 2020’s Mulan, and Raya and the Last Dragon, and Cruella were also available on Premiere Access when they were released this year. But Black Widow is the first film that Disney has shared its figures about how a film performed on premier access, Deadline reports. It has also indicated that streaming at home is still a popular way to watch a movie even though taking a trip is an option for many.
Still, now it is not clear that whether Disney will offer more movies through Premiere Access. The only film which is left in the lineup is Jungle Cruise, which will be released in theatres on 30th July in theatres and on Disney Plus. Disney has already announced that Free Guy and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (which is the next Marvel flick)are debuting exclusively in theaters on August 13th and September 3rd, respectively (though they’ll have a shortened 45-day theatrical exclusivity window).
Along with Disney Plus, Warner Bros are also trying to turn its focus back to the theatre-first debut. Warner Bros will also release films exclusively on the big screen in 2022 after being premiered all of its 2021 movies in theatres as well as on HBO Max. But the strong and blockbuster performance of Black Widow will convince Disney to further release future titles on Disney Plus simultaneously when they hit the theaters.
