Barcelona Captains No Longer Accepting Pay Cuts: Agreement from Other Members Required

The Barcelona captain will take no further salary cuts during the summer transfer window. They wish to make space in their salary cap.

The club recently met with representatives of Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, and Jordi Alba in hopes of finding a formula that would help translate these pay cuts into more space in salaries.

It appears that La Liga has reminded Barcelona that even if Gerard Pique were to receive a salary cut, it will not help create room in the salary cap and register new players.

Both parties have been meeting for the past few days in order to find a mutually satisfactory solution, however, that haven’t been able to reach a conclusion yet. Pique has already taken some pay cuts, either through payment deferrals or direct pay cuts.

Surrendering a Large Sum of Capital of Barcelona

Over the past two years, Pique has surrendered just over €30 million. He did so when a previous board

asked him for help. He did so again last summer when he reached an agreement with current sporting director Mateu Alemany.

Last summer, he again deferred a very important part of his salary, which not only entails risks, but also a cut of just over €15 million from his guaranteed salary for this season, and the next has been accepted.

He also omitted a variable from the easily achievable target in his bid to allow the club to generate more revenue. However, La Liga regulations do not allow the player’s money to be included in that amount in the salary cap. This can only take place if the player has a higher number than he previously gave up.

About the Financial Fair Play Regulations

Even if Pique waives part of his salary, he won’t help Barcelona register their signatures. The club will only do so if Pique awards an amount significantly higher than the above amount, which neither party considers.

This situation affects not only Pique but also Busquets and Jordi Alba, who have done the same in the past.

In the case of Busquets, his contract expires on June 30th, further complicating the situation. A cut in the captain’s salary during that time meant that Barcelona will able to sign Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia a year earlier.

If Barcelona wishes for a room to sign, they must either leave players such as Memphis, Martin Braithwaite, and Sergino Dest or cut the salaries of others such as Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Miralem Pjanic.
