The eagerly awaited Baldurs Gate 3 PC release has been advanced, while the PS5 version has been given a brief postponement. Since the series’ last core entry was released more than 20 years ago, Baldurs Gate 3 will be attempting to appeal to a younger audience of RPG aficionados.
Baldur’s Gate 3, which was formally revealed in 2019, had a release date of August 31st this year. Because Baldur’s Gate fans have had such a long wait since the first two BioWare-developed products, the anticipation for this big third installment has been considerable.
Legendary, long-established series such as Diablo 4, Final Fantasy 16, Mortal Kombat 1, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Street Fighter 6 released large mainline installments in 2023.
Because the forthcoming Fall game season isn’t slowing down, Larian Studios has been forced to change its landing page for Baldurs Gate 3.
Baldur’s Gate revealed in a Steam community update that its PC release date will be moved up roughly a month to August 3, and that the PS5 version will be delayed slightly to September 6. Swen Vincke, director and studio founder of Baldurs Gate 3, spoke with IGN about the business of 2023’s competitive release calendar, pointing to massive titles like Tears of the Kingdom, Diablo 4, and Final Fantasy 16, as well as the imminent Starfield, which serves as direct competition to Baldur’s Gate 3 as a western RPG, even more so now that Baldurs Gate 3’s PS5 version will land on Starfield’s release day.
According to Larian, the decision to move the PC version of Baldurs Gate 3 to 3 August was made to offer gamers more time with the game before other major RPG competitors like Starfield launch in the Autumn. If Larian sticks to its August 31 release date, it will debut the game one day before Starfield’s early access period begins on September 1. This choice may appear to sound in isolation, but the fact that Larian is also pushing the PS5 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 onto Starfield’s same release date raises concerns.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to PC on August 3 and PS5 on September 6.
