Atletico Madrid have suspended three fans following an unfortunate incident in the Madrid derby on Sunday night.

When Real beat Atlético 2-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, the Brazilian became a victim of racism from the stands before the game and during the stadium chants on September 18.

Chants addressed to Vinicius were clearly heard throughout the competition, and the winger was also abused outside the stadium before kick-off after being called a “monkey” by fans involved.

MARCA reported that Atleti identified and suspended three fans for engaging in racist abuse. It took Atletico Madrid two days to issue condemnation for the event, which also included the announcement that fans would be banned from the club if they were involved in these incidents.

However, Los Rojiblancos wouldn’t just stop at suspending three fans. The report says they will investigate and stop anyone who may be involved in racial abuse of a 22-year-old.

CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin also shared his opinions on this matter the next day, stating that a minority of fans should not be allowed to tarnish the name of the majority.

After scoring the goal in the 2–1 win, Vinicius joined the celebrations with his Brazilian counterpart Rodrygo, dancing as he often does when celebrating his own goals.

MD’s phrasing was that these fans were suspended rather than expelled, and Los Rojiblancos may await the outcome of an investigation for that.

In a La Liga report on the matter, they presented evidence that about 500 fans took part in racist chants against Vinicius, so Atleti could face bans and dismissals of more fans in the coming days.
