The Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is known to fund many NGOs in India and abroad. Now it’s being reported that one such NGO carried out unauthorized clinical trials of a vaccine on tribal children in India.
The latest allegation against Bill Gates seems to even more serious than his divorce settlement with Melinda Gates or even his illicit affair with a female employee in Microsoft. This has fueled Twitter to demand his arrest with #ArrestBillGates, and while we write this article, over 35k tweets have already been made on Sunday.
Well, how did this happen? In India’s quarterly journal, GreatGameIndia revealed that a foundation run by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) funded a non-governmental organization called NGO PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health) based in Seattle.
This NGO carried out trials for HPV vaccine on over 14,000 tribal girls in 2009 in Telangana’s Khammam. Two types of HPV vaccine were used in the trial: Gardasil by Merck and Cervarix by GlaxoSmithKline(GSK), and these vaccines were illegally tested directly on girls with 10 and 14 years of age.
These girls came from low-income families and predominantly tribal backgrounds and so were easily persuaded for the trials.
The matter came to light after the trials had gone severely wrong on at least 120 girls who experienced adverse reactions, including epileptic seizures, severe stomach ache, headaches, and mood swings. Still, with its powers and monetary effect, BMGF did get out with this, now netizens burst their anger on Twitter like this:
