According to Sensor Tower Usage Intelligence statistics, Amazon’s Twitch is the most popular mobile live-streaming network, with a 73 percent market share of worldwide average daily active users (DAUs) in Q1 2022.

Although Tencent’s live streaming portal Penguin Esports was shut down earlier this year in April, Twitch’s other competitors are seeing year-over-year growth in their audiences.

The study looked at the top ten most popular mobile apps, with a focus on user-generated live streaming. Even though apps like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok offer live streaming capabilities, they were left out of the cohort since they serve other purposes.

Last quarter, the top five platforms had a market share of more than 90% of daily active users. Twitch led the pack with 73 percent of the market share, followed by Bigo Live with 9%. While Twitch’s advantage is significant, it is down from 75 percent market share in Q1 2021 by 2 percentage points. This reduction indicates that its competitors’ platforms still have the potential to gain users.

While Twitch’s audience is primarily concentrated in the United States, competitors Uplive, Loco, Tango, and Bolo have established a presence in India, with India accounting for the majority of their 1Q22 DAUs. Twitch has a limited foothold in India; around 0.3 percent of its average DAUs came from installs there last quarter.

Bigo Live’s viewership is mostly from Indonesia, so mobile live stream platforms are thriving in other regions as well. In 1Q22, the top 10 apps generated more than $267 million in global consumer spending, with Bigo Live leading the way with $81.8 million in gross revenue. Twitch came in second with $72.6 million, while Tango came in third with $30.4 million.

Even though Kumu and Trovo were not among the top ten most-used apps in 1Q22, they were among the highest-grossing. Kumu’s consumers spent around $5.5 million, while Trovo’s users spent about $2.4 million. The Philippines and Brazil, respectively, have the most active users of the two programs.

While Twitch has developed a significant presence in live streaming, as seen by its dominant market share, developers can still cater to customers in certain markets. However, the competition will be fierce, and tech behemoths like Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook Gaming will be vying for those same viewers.
