Atlético Madrid forward Matheus Cunha is set to go to Premiere League with Wolves on loan and the contract has a €50m purchase obligation

Wolves are set to sign a deal for Matheus Cunha on loan from Atletico for the remaining 2022-23 Premiere League season. The 23-year-old has agreed to the terms of the contract, which has an obligation for the Wolves to get the Brazilian outright for €40m. Wolves have kept behind the local competitors Aston Villa to buy Cunha.

What’s the bigger picture of signing Matheus Cunha?

Atletico signed Cunha for €30m in 2021, but the forward couldn’t make a greater impact with his performance and is seemingly not in the future plans of manager Diego Simeone.  He has had 17 appearances in the season and is still in quest of his first goal.

The striker is having a medical at Wolves on Wednesday. Reports suggest the side is potentially close to signing the loan deal with Cunha.

They had also faced competition from Leeds United, Arsenal, and Everton for the Brazilian after opening the discussion to buy him by the end of last month’s end.

Talks are positive

The verbal agreement is now in place, and Matheus Cunha is expected to be the first signing in Julen Lopetegui’s tenure as manager. The Spaniard has his sights on six new deals with a top priority to sign British players as the struggling squad would look forward to improvement.

Cunha has eight caps for Brazil but has only had one league appearance for his present club Atletico this season.

The club is in talks with Atletico regarding a contract for center-back Felipe and has talked with Manchester United for a loan deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka but experiencing competition from Crystal Palace and West Ham.

Matheus Cunha joined Atletico in August 2021 but is expected to walk away within 15 months.
