Returnal might require 32 GB RAM in your PC to run Smoothly

Returnal, the newest PlayStation exclusive to leap to PC, comes with a hefty RAM need. While you’ll need at least 16GB of RAM in your system to make it playable, Returnal’s Steam page advises at least 32GB to get the most out of its gameplay and graphics.

To give you an idea of how odd this is, Microsoft Flight Simulator requires a minimum of 8GB of RAM and recommends a maximum of 16 GB. Other graphically demanding PC games, such as Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Dying Light 2, and A Plague Tale: Requiem, do not recommend more than 16GB of RAM.

Return is a third-person roguelike shooter with indisputably amazing aesthetics, but it’s unclear why the game requires so much RAM to fully unlock its potential.

The rest of the system requirements appear to be fairly standard for a game ported from a next-generation console, requiring at least an Intel i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X CPU, as well as an Nvidia RTX 2070 Super or AMD RX 6700 XT GPU or better to fulfill the recommended specs.

However, a leaked video of the game (since removed) may offer some light on the high RAM suggestion. According to PC Gamer, the video shows that Returnal will support both Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR upscaling technologies, as well as ray-tracing for both shadows and reflections and unlocked framerates.

Even though Returnal does enable ray-tracing and upscaling technologies, it does not explain why Sony recommends 32GB of RAM as a minimum. Both Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered support ray-tracing and DLSS, however only the highest level of ultimate ray-tracing requires 32GB of RAM. Otherwise, both games may be played comfortably with only 16GB of RAM.
