Oliver Giroud equals Henry as France bounces back from an early Godwin goal

France bounced back from an early Australia blow, ultimately sealing a victory for 4-1 at the AI Janoub stadium. It was a magical night for Oliver Giroud. The star AC Milan striker was just two goals behind to level with Thierry Henry’s 51 goals, as the country’s top goal scorer of all time.

Historic night for Oliver Giroud

Craig Godwin stunned everyone as he put the Socceroos ahead after nine minutes and fired a Mathew Leckie cross that left Hugo Loris with hardly any chance. Lucas Hernandez’s knee injury further created a troubling situation for France. His place Theo was brought as the replacement.

Australia didn’t have enough chances to keep up with the excitement. France leveled the score after Adrien Rabiot’s close-range header, ahead of 27 minutes.  After five minutes, Giroud put his team ahead with a smooth tap-in.

From then, it was a total France show, with Didier Deschamps’s side spoiling various chances to increase their advantage before the half. Just before the whistle blew for the opening half, Jackson Irvine’s glorious header helped the defending champs lead at 3-1.

Australia lingered in the match until in the 68th minute, Kylian Mbappe ducked the ball from close range and Giroud recorded his 51st goal for the side after some artwork from the PSG star down the left.

Leading the points table

From there Les Bleus put up the show in the final minutes with ease. Now, they stand number one in Group D, ahead of Denmark and Tunisia. They had a goalless draw in the match earlier on Wednesday.

Qatar World Cup 2022 is in full swing and the excitement levels of fans are limitless. Fans are looking forward to Brazil’s game against Serbia on 25th, at 12:30 am.
