Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU is extremely fast with over 500fps in 1440p

Nvidia keeps showcasing the incredibly high framerates that its most recent flagship GPU can extract from current and forthcoming high-profile games. As both products get ready to go on sale at the same time, Blizzard made the decision to alter Overwatch 2’s performance metrics to make the most of the graphics card.

Nvidia recently disclosed to PC Gamer that Blizzard raised the framerate limit for Overwatch 2 to 600 fps after evaluating how well the next game performed on the GeForce RTX 4090. Additionally, Nvidia stated that Overwatch 2 would support its Nvidia Reflex latency-reducing function.

The RTX 4090 ran Overwatch 2 at framerates that were routinely over 360fps at 1440p, frequently over 400fps, and occasionally approaching 500fps in a recent demo. More impressively, the demo probably ran at native 1440p without any resolution upscaling, showing the raw performance capabilities of the 4090.

Blizzard and Nvidia made no mention of Overwatch 2 supporting either DLSS or DLSS3, the latter of which increased Cyberpunk 2077’s framerate to 171 frames per second at the highest ray tracing settings. Although AMD FSR was confirmed in the Overwatch 2 beta, it’s doubtful that Nvidia would employ its rival’s upscaling technology in a demonstration.

Overwatch 2 and other esports shooters are designed to support incredibly high framerates, but Blizzard probably didn’t anticipate a new GPU capable of 500 frames per second, which is why the maximum framerate was changed. The prior framerate cap for the game has not been confirmed, however PCGamingWiki says that it was 400 fps for the initial Overwatch.

The performance of the 4090 may make the Asus Rog Swift 500Hz, which Nvidia announced in May, acceptable as most high-end monitors can only achieve refresh rates of 240Hz or 360Hz.

It’s possible that AU Optronics, another manufacturer, is working on a 540Hz display. Although both monitors are only 1080p, assuming the 4090 doesn’t hit CPU restrictions, it might play Overwatch 2 at framerates that are even higher than in the most recent Nvidia demo.

On October 4, Overwatch 2 replaces its predecessor, which debuted on PCs more than six years ago. A little more than a day prior to the release of Overwatch 2’s free-to-play multiplayer mode, legacy servers will go completely down. Sometime around 2023, the game’s paid PvE component will launch.

On October 12, one week after Overwatch 2, the RTX 4090 will be available for $1,599. In November, the RTX 4080 will be available in two versions: a $899 12GB model and a $1,199 16GB model.
