TwitchCon announces to be held this year with COVID-19 Safety measures

According to regional California regulations, TwitchCon would return to San Diego without the COVID-19 safety measures earlier this month. The company has since indicated that it has changed its position and will now enforce a mask requirement indoors and require attendees to provide proof of immunization or a negative COVID-19 test to enter the event.

“We’ve been listening to all of your feedback and know that many of you–especially those who are immunocompromised and the people who support them–want stricter health measures in place to help you feel safe attending TwitchCon San Diego in person…Today, we’re updating our health measures to require masks in all indoor spaces at TwitchCon. Additionally, we will require all attendees to provide proof of vaccination or proof of a negative covid test taken within 72 hours of attending the show,” reads the now-updated post on TwitchCon’s website.

In addition, everyone who bought a TwitchCon ticket before August 12 is qualified for a refund up until August 19 if they are dissatisfied with the modified rules.

The modification follows criticism from the Twitch community on the absence of any safety precautions at the announcement of TwitchCon earlier this month. Fans of the website instantly voiced their displeasure with the company’s lack of caution, and some Twitch streams hinted that they might not attend the event at all unless it changed its mind.

At that moment, several Twitch staff members, including Lead Community Producer Zachary Ryan, pointed viewers and streamers in the direction of UserVoice, a mechanism that Twitch utilizes to collect recommendations and feedback from its users who then vote on it for staff members to bring up internally.

Despite just calling for a mask requirement, the UserVoice article that noted the increase in COVID-19 statistics following TwitchCon in Amsterdam received over 4,000 votes, forcing Twitch to implement additional safeguards that are in line with the majority of currently held conventions. The San Diego Convention Center will host TwitchCon San Diego from October 7–9.
