Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Here’s everything we know about the Game

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, this year’s Call of Duty game, is being developed by Infinity Ward. Expectations for the Call of Duty: Vanguard sequel is high given that the 2021 game failed to meet Activision’s sales goals. A few trailers for Modern Warfare 2, which Activision describes as the beginning of a “new era” for Call of Duty, have already been released.

Here, we analyze all the information we have discovered and emphasize the ongoing leaks and speculations about the game.

Modern Warfare 2’s official release date has been set for October 28, which falls inside the traditional CoD game release timeframe. Release dates have been set for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The reintroduction of the game to Steam is also announced, with a $70 price tag.

The marketing for Modern Warfare 2 refers to a “new era” of Call of Duty. In a June early preview of Modern Warfare 2, Activision and Infinity Ward claimed that the game was made for “state-of-the-art” linked gameplay built on a single integrated engine. Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, and other co-studios will all use this newly developed engine for upcoming Call of Duty games. The story of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 was largely focused on Captain Price expanding his recognizable task team from the first series. Fans can rejoice that Captain Price has once again enlisted their beloved Modern Warfare characters for a new plot, even though it is predictable.

Three years have passed since the events of the 2019 reboot of Modern Warfare, and Captain Price’s famed Task Force 141 is now fully organized and conducting operations all over the world in Modern Warfare 2. The recognizable figures Simon “Ghost” Riley, Kyle “Gaz,” and John “Soap” MacTavish join Price in Task Force 141, along with a brand-new member named Alejandro Vargas. Additionally, Gaz and Ghost did not serve in Task Force 141 simultaneously throughout the original trilogy; instead, Gaz only made an appearance in the first game, while Ghost made an appearance in the 2009 follow-up (both were also voiced by the same person).

During our early glimpse of Modern Warfare 2, we also learned about some of the multiplayer options, including Team Deathmatch and Domination, two classic Call of Duty variants. In addition to two new round-based objective modes called Hostage and Knockout, the popular large-scale Ground War mode from 2019’s Modern Warfare is returning this year.

Infinity Ward claimed that all of the main multiplayer maps for Modern Warfare 2 were scaled back to accommodate traditional 6v6 matches, but many of the core multiplayer maps in 2019’s Modern Warfare were relatively huge at launch. Additionally, Ground War maps will no longer be expanded versions of common multiplayer settings, according to the developer, who also stated that these distinct “war maps” were created from the start with large-scale modes in mind.

The third option in Modern Warfare 2 will be Spec Ops, the well-liked co-op mode from the first Modern Warfare 2 that consisted of a series of two-player missions with a variety of objectives and varying degrees of difficulty. Ten years later, with the 2019 Modern Warfare revival, Spec Ops made a comeback, but the mode underwent an ambitious overhaul that added four-player squads and larger terrain. Game director Jack O’Hara of Infinity Ward said that Modern Warfare 2 would be more like a better version of Spec Ops from 2009.

Although the Spec Ops announcement should put an end to claims that Modern Warfare 2 will contain a new game mode called DMZ that is inspired by Escape From Tarkov, leakers are still claiming the mode exists. RalphsValve, a well-known Call of Duty leaker, speculates that the DMZ mode would be included in Modern Warfare 2 in 2023 as a free-to-play expansion, similar to the Warzone expansion’s delayed release for Modern Warfare 2019. According to reports, DMZ is an open-world mode that combines elements of battle royale and survival games. It has been in development for four years.

Activision has also revealed that Call of Duty’s Ricochet anti-cheat system will launch alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 on January 1. Since the release of Ricochet in 2021, Activision has reported a “significant” decline in Call of Duty cheaters.

It has been announced that the follow-up to Warzone will debut in 2022, sometime after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It is also reported that the battle royale will use the same vehicles, swimming, mantling, and gameplay as Modern Warfare 2, although it is yet unknown whether or not the weapons and skins from earlier games will be present in this iteration.
