With Apple‘s Worldwide Developers Conference only a few days away, leaks and rumors about Apple’s next software plans are starting to fly. And iPad users may be in for a surprise. According to our sources, some of the year’s biggest announcements will be for iPadOS 16, including an expansion of the iPad’s multitasking feature.
Multitasking Improvements
Apple has progressively, albeit hesitantly, changed the way iPads multitask. You can currently have two windows open side by side, with another in the slide-over view on the side. It works, for the most part, although it can be difficult to set up, and it’s not evident how to move or rearrange apps.

According to the sources, iPadOS 16 will expand upon that interface, which may mean a variety of things. At some point, though, there is only one option for Apple: full, free-form multitasking a la the Mac, where you can build windows in any size and shape you choose. Because developers have largely built their apps to a couple of precise sizes and aspect ratios, the iPad may not get that far.
However, now that the screens are almost laptop-sized and many versions are powered by the same M CPUs found in Apple’s latest Macs, there’s plenty of power and real estate to run more than three apps at once.

Apple and iPadOS 6
Apple is embarking on a project way to see and toggle between all of your open apps as part of the multitasking push. The present system is already laptop-like, so it will be interesting to watch what Apple develops in this area.
For the most part, Apple has handled the iPad like a large phone rather than a little laptop. However, as this device has become more powerful and functional in recent years, and as Apple has engaged in accessories like the Magic Keyboard, it is evident that the tablet is more MacBook than iPhone. Apple appears to agree and is prepared to modify the software accordingly.
