Porto beat Benfica at stoppage time to secure their 30th league title

Before the last gameweek of this domestic season, Porto have secured their 30th Primeira Liga title last Saturday (7th May) after claiming a crucial 1-0 away win against their arch-rivals Benfica.

According to the latest UEFA coefficient, the Portuguese first division league Primeira Liga is the sixth-best European domestic first division competition. While Benfica have won most Primeira Liga titles 37 times, Porto became the second team to win 30 Primeira Liga titles.

In gameweek 33, O Clássico returned when Porto faced the hosts Benfica at Lisbon on 7th May. The 24-year-old Nigerian left-back Zaidu Sanusi scored the only goal of the match during the fourth minute of the stoppage time in the final half of the game.

That 1-0 win helped the Dragons to secure their 30th Primeira Liga title after earning 88 points in 33 games. Sporting CP have also secured the second spot in the Primeira Liga 2021/22 with 82 points in 33 matches. While both these teams have already booked their spots for the UEFA Champions League 2022/23 Group Stage, Benfica will have to compete from the third qualifying round for the next UCL tournament placement.

It is Porto’s third Primeira Liga trophy in the last five seasons. The Blues and Whites will now focus on the Taça de Portugal final, where they will meet Tondela at Oeiras on 22nd May.

Porto are near to breaking Primeira Liga’s most points record

Porto have already earned the joint highest points in a Primeira Liga season (88 points), which Benfica recorded in the 2015/16 season and the Dragons recorded in the 2017/18 season.

On the final day of this Primeira Liga season (15th May), Porto will host Estoril. As they have a great chance to earn 89 points (with a draw result) or 91 points (by winning) by only avoiding a defeat against Estoril, the Blue and whites will create a new history with a record points in a Primeira Liga season.

In the running Primeira Liga season, Porto have lost only one away game, while they have four drawn games along with 28 victories. In this Portuguese first division season, the Dragons were unbeaten in their first 30 games before the hosts Braga handed them a 1-0 defeat last April.

It was also Porto’s first Primeira Liga defeat since the hosts Paços de Ferreira beat them by 3-2 on 30th October 2020. During this almost one-and-a-half-year period, the Blue and whites enjoyed the record of 58 straight unbeaten games in the Primeira Liga.

Mehdi Taremi is the leading goal-scorer for the Dragons

Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi has scored 20 goals for Porto this season, and he is currently standing in the second position in the list of most goals in this Primeira Liga season. Benfica’s Uruguyan forward Darwin Núñez is leading this table with 26 goals.

On the other hand, Taremi has also managed 12 assists in the Primeira Liga 2021/22, the joint third-highest assists in this competition.
