Cricket Australia roped in Andrew McDonald after Justin Langer was compelled to quit his position after players’ discontent. With Australia’s Test series win in Pakistan, CA brought Andrew McDonald back as a full-time head coach.
The official announcement is yet to be made which will be done in 48 hours.
Andrew McDonald is the interim coach of Australia right now after Justin Langer’s departure in February. The Aussies have made an impressive impact under the guidance of McDonald. McDonald started his stint with a victory of 3-1 win in a five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. After the series, Australia won a Test series and a one-off T20I against Pakistan but suffered a loss in the ODI series.
According to the reports, Cricket Australia officials were satisfied with the team’s performance during McDonald’s short reign and offered him a full-time role. CA also interviewed Trevor Bayliss, the former ICC World Cup-winning coach for the role, but has decided to offer the position to McDonald instead.
CA has almost confirmed Andrew McDonald as their new head coach but still, he is expecting a bit of clarity from the Cricket Australia board.
“Do I want the job? It depends on what it looks like, how Cricket Australia see the job unfolding and I will probably get more detail and clarity moving forward. There was no great detail or clarity on what the role would look like,” he said.
Australia’s next tour will be in Sri Lanka in the month of June. The team is set to play three T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests against the team. CA would expect McDonald to start preparing the players as early as possible. It’s not totally in his hands if he would accept this offer.
