IPL 2022: Virat Kohli discloses the true reason for stepping down as skipper of the Royal Challengers Bangalore

Virat Kohli, who resigned as the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has spoken out about his decision to walk down. The 33-year-old admitted that his batting was suffering as a result of his leadership role and that it was, therefore, preferable for him to step down.

    Kohli After Quitting Captaincy

The 33-year-old has stated that he is enjoying the pure thrill of batting again after relinquishing the captaincy. In a video posted on RCB’s social media, the former India captain stated that enjoying the game is very important to him.

During the IPL 2022, RCB will be led by renowned South African hitter Faf du Plessis. He was selected by the franchise at the auction for a fee of 7 crores and designated captain shortly after.

Virat Kohli announced last year that he will open for RCB, resolving the opening dilemma. However, now that he has stepped down as captain, it will be up to new skipper Du Plessis to make the decision. Kohli will very certainly continue to start with Du Plessis as his new opening partner. Anuj Rawat, on the other hand, could be a viable alternative for RCB.

    Real Reason Revealed

On the eve of the RCB vs Punjab Kings match, he disclosed why he stepped down as captain and his reasons for doing so.

He said, “It’s a wise thing for anyone to create some space for themselves, just take a deep breath and restructure things and say ‘Hold on, I might not have looked at a lot of things that I need to work on, and here’s a chance for me to restructure, rethink about what I want to do. And just find things to improve, find a little bit at practice something that you look forward to. That is something I’ve experienced in this phase.”

He also stated that now that the captaincy responsibilities have been removed, he enjoys coming to practice and focusing on his skills much more. Kohli was asked if he felt younger and brighter now that he is not the captain, he said: “When you make a decision like this, a lot of people go, one should look at things from a point of responsibility and you have to take responsibility.”

He also added: “People don’t understand that if you as a player cannot be the best version of yourself on the field, then that responsibility for me personally as a player means nothing.”
